OT/NT: Old Testament (39 books)
SECTIONS: The Law (5), History (12), Poetry (5), Major Prophets (5), Minor Prophets (12)
TRADITIONAL AUTHORS: Various
KEY FIGURES: The People of Israel
Containing five sections (see above), the Protestant Old Testament (1) is a compilation of 39 ancient books. The Catholic Bible, which includes 7 Deutero-Canonical Books, contains 46 books (printer friendly document available on this webpage). Beginning with Genesis (2) and ending with Malachi (3), they are not arranged chronologically. Authors of the various books, all inspired by God Himself (2 Timothy 3:16-17), offer account after account of the relationship between God (4) and His children, the Israelites (5).
The 5 books of The Law, also referred to as the Torah or Pentateuch, tell us about the Creation (6) of the Earth, Man and everything else. The traditional author, Moses (7), tells us of Noah's Ark and the Flood (8); the lineage of Abraham (9), Isaiah (10), and Jacob (11); the Twelve Tribes of Israel (12) in Egypt (13), their Exodus (14) after 400 years of bondage and their subsequent wandering in the wilderness (15) prior to entering into the Promised Land (Canaan) (16). The 12 books of History pick up where The Law left off. The entrance of God's children into the Land of Milk and Honey begins with a conquest, but is followed by relentless disobedience (18) and lawlessness. Consequently, God raises up oppressive rulers over His children. The United Monarchy of Israel (19) is eventually split into two; they are later invaded, conquered and exiled by the Assyrians (20) and the Babylonians (21). Eventually, they return to their ancestral land (22) and the Covenant (23) with God is renewed. Click HERE (24) to explore!
The 5 books of Poetry include what is, arguably, (one of) the oldest written account(s) in the Old Testament, the book of Job (25). This can be considered the gold standard response by which to be measured while in the throes of suffering. The other 4 books share the unique manner in which the people of Israel communicated with their Creator as well as with one another. Click HERE (26) to explore!
The 5 books of the Major Prophets include biblical titans such as Isaiah (27), Jeremiah (28), Daniel (29) and others who bring the Word of God (30) big time. This included warnings of judgment as well as a hope in the coming of the Messiah (31). Click HERE (32) to explore!
The 12 books of the Minor Prophets are referenced as such due to their smaller size when compared to the larger "Major" Prophets (a). Beginning with Hosea (33), this section concludes with the final book of the Old Testament, Malachi (34). Click HERE (35) to explore!
