Rest on the Flight into Egypt (Luc-Olivier Merson, 1880), Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

The sole biblical (1) account of the Holy Family's (2) Flight into Egypt is recorded in the Gospel (3) of Matthew (4) (Matthew 2:13-15). Having been alerted by the Magi (5) about the birth of a King (6), King Herod (7) feels his power base may be in jeopardy. Accordingly, he is sure to take action to protect his interests.
 
Some time after The Magi Visit The Messiah (8), Matthew's narrative tells of an Angel of the Lord (9) appearing in a dream (10) to Joseph (11), the earthly father of Jesus (12). “Get up,” the Angel said to Joseph, “take the child and His mother and escape to Egypt (13). Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill Him.” Egypt would prove to be a safe haven for the Holy Family, as it was outside the boundary of Herod's authority.
 
Ever obedient (14) to the Angel of the Lord, Joseph got up and readied Mary (15) and Jesus, and they left for Egypt that very night. During this time, Herod ordered the Massacre of the Innocents (16) in his quest to kill the threat to his throne.
 
The Holy Family remained in Egypt until receiving word (17) that Herod died. This fulfilled what God (18) had said through the Prophet (19) Hosea (20):  “Out of Egypt I called my Son” (Hosea 11:1).
